Writing help!

So I need writing advice. What program do you use? What do you do with the kids who have very few letter/sounds?

We do kid writing but are changing to the writing academy.

Right now we do a picture and write an sentence about it. I keep the same picture and have my students help me write the sentences. Then they go to their seats and draw then write. This is a terrible drawing of my dog, Zoie, who is mean. I love they remembered me saying that and wrote it.

Advice? Tips? All welcome.

Fun food

I love to have a fun snack every week to go with the theme or the letter we are learning.
Our first fun food was a chicka chicka boom boom tree.

Then we studied the letter Land apples so we had a lion and the next day baked apples.
She ate half the main so this was the best picture.
They loved cooking in class. This one required a lot of instruction and following the rules. They used an apple peer, plastic knife, and a recipe.

Our latest fun food was octopus stew. Just a hotdog cut. I hate, hate hotdogs but they love them.

My kinder cuties look forward to fun food Friday every week and we have a blast cooking in kindergarten.

First week Done!

To start the year off the school stopped ringing our 9:30 attendance bell so now I have to just remember to do it... I had a hard enough time remembering it with the bell.

We have had a great start to the school year and it is even better that our first weekend is a long weekend. What isn't great the kids who were still adjusting to school will have to start all over.

We have been working really hard on writing names. Some kids can write their names perfect, some use capitals or flip letters and others have no idea how to write their name. What fun things do you do to help your students write their names?

I also recieved my SLANTbox and love it! If you haven't heard about this it is very exciting, not only do you get mail (who doesn't love mail) you get to know two great teachers! Go to Lessons with coffee for more information.

Box Tops

Box tops are a wonderful thing. Who doesn't love free money for your school?? I have been collecting them and have cut them out and put them in groups of ten over summer just because I know it helps out a lot at school. We ask the parents to save them, we save them, I reach out on social media for people who don't have kids to save them. Here is my question for you... how do you get parent participation? We have some that send them and some that never do. In my class of 22 last year I had the same 5 kids bring them all year.

This is what we do.

1.) We have competitions. The class that brings the most gets an ice-cream party or something.

2.) We send home those things from the box top website where they attach the box tops to it and return it.

3.) We just remind parents on our newsletters etc about them and their importance.

Do other schools have a hard time getting them as well? We have over a thousand kids in our school and our checks are only about 400 dollars.

Ten things about me!

I am joining the fun at blog hoppin and sharing ten random things about me.

This is so fun to learn about all the other teachers out there.

1.) I married my high school sweetheart. We started dating when we were 15! We went to two different colleges. He went to UT and I went to Texas State. We have been married for 3 years (we are now 25.)

2.) My husband and I are both teachers.

3.) I graduated college a semester early so I started teaching when I was 21. I was the youngest teacher at my school when I started.

4.) I student taught at my school and was offered a job before I was done student teaching. I was so lucky to get my job.

5.) I hate my food to touch so I always eat my food in sections.

6.) Speaking of food I am a very picky eater.

7.) I write thank you notes and I also have my students do it too. I think writing them is a lost art and I know I love getting them.

8.) I have quite possibly the cutest little boy ever.

9.) I teach in the same town I grew up in.

10.) I love good burgers, french fries, fun fetti cookies and cupcakes, zoos, Target, date nights/days, and being with my little family. Teaching is my heart and I love what I do.

Read-Aloud link

I am super late to the linky party at The Teacher's Chair, but I wanted to join in on the fun since read alouds are part of my favorite time of the day.

We start the year off every year reading Pete the Cat. We LOVE Pete, I love that they memorize the book and feel successful "reading" it. My kids love singing and rocking with Pete.

How do Dinosaurs go to School? This books is fun about what to do and not do. The kids love making list of what is ok and what isn't ok to do.
Splat the Cat. Splat is another cat we love in our room. I use this book to go around the room and talk about what we did over summer vacation and like Splat, some kids have a hard time picking just one thing to share. Click here to buy How Do Dinosaurs Go To School

This is a good book for the kids who are nervous and don't want their parents to leave. Jake has the same problem. Jake finally relates to something the teacher said and all his fears are gone.

These are just a few of the books we read at the beginning of school. I love, love, love read alouds and read a ton at the beginning of school.
